Intravenous Therapy

    Two-Step Formula Example

    Order: 1000 mL Normal Saline (0.9%) in 6 hours
    Available: 1 L Normal Saline (0.9%): IV tubing set is labeled 10 gtt/mL.

    How many drops per minute (gtt/min) will the client receive?

    Two Step Method

    First: 1000 / 6 = 167mL/hr

    Second: (167 (mL) X 10 (gtt/mL)) / (60 minutes) = 167 / 6 = 27.8 or 28 gtts/min

    Answer: 28 gtts/min

    Reminder: IV flow rates are rounded off, and answers within 1 or 2 gtts/min are correct.
